Supersonic Airliner (II)


INTRODUCTION

On 25 July 1993, the Post Office of Moldova (Poșta Moldovei) issued a series of postage stamps with the title Supersonic Airliner (II). The issue comprises four stamps, with associated cancellation (postmark) and first day cover (FDC). The designer was Pal Varaga. The printing was performed by Hungarian State Printers, Budapest.

ABOUT THE THEME

A supersonic aircraft is an aircraft able to fly faster than the speed of sound (Mach number 1). Supersonic aircraft were developed in the second half of the twentieth century and have been used almost entirely for research and military purposes. Only two, Concorde and the Tupolev Tu-144, were ever designed for civil use as airliners. Fighter jets are the most common example of supersonic aircraft, although they don't always travel at supersonic speed. Read more..
