INTRODUCTION

On 18 September 2010, the Post Office of Moldova (Poșta Moldovei) issued a series of postage stamps with the title Folk Dances (II). The issue comprises two stamps, with associated cancellation (postmark) and first day cover (FDC). The designer was Alexei Colabneac. The printing was performed by Tipografia Centrală, Chişinău.

The Căluşari (Romanian pronunciation: [kəluˈʃarʲ]) were the members of a Romanian fraternal secret society who practiced a ritual acrobatic dance known as the căluş. According to the Romanian historian Mircea Eliade, the Căluşari were known for 'their ability to create the impression of flying in the air' which he believed represented both the galloping of a horse and the dancing of the fairies (zine). Indeed, the group’s patron was the 'Queen of the Fairies' (Doamna Zinelor), who was also known as Irodiada and Arada, and who Eliade connected with the folkloric figure Diana. Read more..

ABOUT THE THEME

The 2010 Romanian floods were the result of an extreme weather event that struck Romania in late June 2010. Currently, at least 21 people died. The north-east of the country, especially Suceava County was most affected. Also affected was the Chernivtsi Oblast in neighbouring Ukraine. Read more..
